Truck Owners and Drivers Association

Truck Owners and Drivers Association of Africa

By the Truckers, For the Truckers.

Truckers of the World, Unite! Truckers of Africa, Unite!
What Truckers Are Up Against

Truckers need to unite to get a rule changed, a law passed, a treaty renegotiated or a regulator moved — which is why a Global Network of associations exists.

Axle load harmonisation

Regional blocs

Load limits change at borders on the same corridor, forcing reloading, penalties or both. Harmonisation agreements exist on paper; implementation is the gap.

Roadblocks and informal payments

National governance

Corridor checkpoints impose delay and unofficial cost that no rate accounts for and no operator can refuse. It is a governance problem, not a commercial one.

Border post dwell

Regional blocs

One-stop border posts reduce dwell where they function. Extending and resourcing them is a state-to-state process.

Cross-border insurance and permits

Regional blocs

Third-party cover and transit permits must be arranged country by country. Regional schemes exist and are unevenly recognised.

AfCFTA transport protocols

Continental treaty

The continental trade area was built to remove these barriers. Whether the transport protocols deliver is the question drivers are best placed to answer and least often asked.

Attacks on foreign-national drivers

National security policy

On some routes drivers have been targeted over nationality. It requires policing and political leadership, and a continental body cannot be silent about it.

Used vehicle import standards

National regulation

Much of the fleet is second-hand imports. Emissions and roadworthiness rules arrive with no replacement route for the operators running them.

Fuel quality variation along corridors

National regulation

Fuel specification differs across the corridor and damages engines the operator cannot afford to repair. Standards are set nationally.

Corridor finance and small operator credit

Development finance

Equipment finance on terms an individual operator can meet is largely unavailable across the continent.

What the Association Does

Each of these answers something on the list above. This is the work of moving those decisions, not a catalogue of services.

Argues axle-load harmonisation with driver-gathered evidence

Member evidence

Agreements exist on paper. The Association supplies the corridor data that shows where they are not implemented.

Documents roadblock delay and informal cost corridor by corridor

Member evidence

A governance problem measured by the people paying it, and put to the corridor authorities.

Takes the driver's position to the regional economic communities

Formal submission

Corridor management is negotiated between states. The drivers on those corridors get a seat through the Association.

Tests whether the continental trade area has delivered

Campaign

The free trade area was built to remove these barriers. Drivers are best placed to say whether it has.

Speaks on attacks against foreign-national drivers

Campaign

A continental chapter cannot be silent about drivers targeted over nationality.

Builds the four language chapters the continent needs

Coalition

French, Arabic, Portuguese and Swahili, without which most of the continent cannot read this page.

Partner with Us

The Association invites local and regional associations, truck owners, motor carriers and professional drivers to build this with us.

Road freight is carried by the people doing the work, and their expertise is what matters most. Joining means becoming a regional partner in the Global Network of Associations worldwide — what is learned here reaches operators on every other corridor the Global Network covers, and what they have learned comes back.

Let us build a future where the road freight sector is robust, inclusive and forward-thinking.
